Federal Reserve Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank reduced borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second rate cut in the current year amid economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank

The move to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Highlights Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Price increases has risen and stays moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually studies BLS data to determine labor market conditions, such as the count of employment gains created to the market and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in August.

The figure of jobs added to the economy in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Show Ongoing Decline

Though BLS was set to release September’s job market report in early October, it suspended its release when the shutdown began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported recently that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, which he had previously said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Shows Moderate Rise

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still issued its price statistics for September that showed that prices are going up, although gradually. Costs increased three percent over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
