A person who contaminated sweets with sedative and distributed them to children at a summer camp in the region has confessed to sexual offences against two young males both nine and ten years old.

Jon Ruben was taken into custody after eight minors and an older person fell ill at Stathern Lodge in July.

The elderly man, from that region, pleaded guilty to a multiple criminal counts when he stood at Leicester Crown Court on the end of the week.

However, he disputed a single sexual charge he was facing, which was against a young boy.

The defendant was remanded in custody before a subsequent court date on November 28th.

'Treat game'

The legal representative, presenting evidence, detailed the criminal behavior to the court.

She said his those affected were under-privileged children who were attending a youth camp which he ran.

The man played a "sweet game" with the minors, the legal counsel explained, in which he would go into the boys' rooms when they were preparing to sleep and request they to ingest treats "as fast as possible".

She stated to the judge the man had conducted this practice with the children "repeatedly", and children had previously fallen ill the following morning.

She stated the defendant had been capable of justifying this repeatedly as the minors being "overstimulated by activities", until his stepson had worries in recently.

The prosecutor continued: "Recently" his stepchild had suspicions about the activities, justifiably.

"They decided to have a look in the defendant's belongings."

The prosecutor said items including baby oil, ointment and syringes were found, and his stepson notified the police about his concerns.

She said the man proceeded to engage in the "sweet game" with six boys that night - Saturday 26 July - and they were all sick the next day.

"Authorities" had not gone out by that point," she stated further.

The police watchdog, the Independent Office for Police Conduct, had stated that it was reviewing Leicestershire Police's handling of the events.

Mrs Prior said the minors were unable to walk properly due to being ill, so the stepson notified the police a second time.

She said Ruben then conducted the "treat game" in a area of five minors.
